wieder am Brienzersee – on lake Brienzer again

I met Dave from hightide.ch first time last year in October, after having exchanged a few mails. We had a short paddle with his wife on lake Brienz . Yesterday we came together again, in order to paddle from Bönigen to Brienz. Unfortunately the forecast announced rain for most of the day – and that proved true…

Rain, wind, waves – the conditions were not too comfortable (the water temperature being about 12 degree Celsius). But we did the whole trip, and it became a quite special day. I’m more relaxed, when the sun is shining and the water temperatures are above 16 degrees Celsius, but to be „alone“ in a small kayak on a Swiss mountain lake on a rainy day, seeing a big passenger boat from time to time, and otherwise only birds, is also a great experience.

The Giessbachfälle had much more water than in autumn, probably twice or more!

Brienzersee

Gestern Samstag kam das lange geplante Treffen mit Dave von Hightide, nach mehreren Anlaeufen, endlich zustande. Philipp hatte mir das Kajak am Freitagabend noch aufs Auto geladen, am Samstagmorgen um elf Uhr bin ich in Zuerich losgefahren, das Treffen sollte am frühen Nachmittag in Brienz stattfinden. Die Autofahrt verlief problemlos, bis auf den Stau auf dem Luzerner Cityring (Baustelle), der mich eine gute halbe Stunde kostete. Ueber den Bruenig zu fahren war bei dem wunderbaren Herbstwetter ein schoenes Erlebnis. Um Viertel nach eins war ich beim Bahnhof Brienz und erkannte Dave, dank den Kajakbuegeln auf dem Autodach, sofort. Da wir uns nur uebers Web kannten, ging es vor dem Einbooten noch ans Kennenlernen; auch Oli, seine Frau, die Physiotherapeutin ist, war mit von der Partie. Nachdem der Wetterbericht am Vorabend und auch am Samsatgmorgen noch Wind, mit starken Boen, gemeldet hatte, war ich gespannt auf die Situation auf dem Wasser.  Beim Einbooten war der See jedoch spiegelglatt; auf dem Rueckweg hatten wir zwar etwas Gegenwind und leichte Wellen, alles in allem aber unproblematische Bedingungen (schon fast langweilig…).

Gepaddelt sind wir bis zum „Schnaegge-Inseli“ vor Iseltwald; von dort aus ueber den See zurueck zur Einbootstelle. Hier ein paar Impressionen, fotografiert hat Oli (Danke, Olivia).

Auf der Rueckfahrt abends war zwar immer noch Stau auf dem Luzerner Cityring, aber doch etwas weniger als mittags. So war ich dann ungefaehr um 21 Uhr wieder zu Hause; bis ich Alles ausgeladen und das feuchte Kajakzeug ausgepackt hatte, war es 22 Uhr – da war ich so müde, dass ich beim Zeitung lesen auf dem Sessel beinahe eingeschlafen waere.

Nachtrag: Dave’s Schilderungen vom Paddeln im Winter haben bei mir (wieder mal) intensive Ueberlegungen ausgeloest, wie ich das fuer mich vielleicht doch umsetzen koennte. Es geht insbesondere darum, dass ich einen Trockenanzug braeuchte, und zwar auf Mass, da ja bei mir das rechte Bein fehlt…

Intensive afternoon on the Lake Brienz with Dave and Oli from Hightide. Dave will start the Hightide kayak school in 2013 and offer tours and courses on several Swiss lakes. We shared experiences (as he is interested in Paddleability) and we made a really nice tour from Brienz to Iseltwald and back (maybe 18 km) on the lake. Phantastic autumn colours – and no strong wind – in contrast to the forecast which predicted wind and gusts… I really hope it was not the last time on the water this year!

Lake Brienz (German: Brienzersee) is a lake north of the Alps, in the Canton of Berne. The lake took its name from the village Brienz on the northern shore. Interlaken lies to the south west of the lake. The shores are steep, there is almost no shallow water in the entire lake. On the south shore are the Giessbach Falls and the hamlet of Iseltwald.
